For those of you who were not able to attend, we wanted you to know that the SSRC- and Free Press-sponsored Media Policy
Research Pre-conference in Memphis on January 11th was a great success.

We were very pleased with the participation of more than 200
scholars, students, activists and policy-makers at the pre-conference, and the
depth and breadth of the discussions that took place there. Clearly we have
moved beyond making a case for media policy-engaged academic research, and are
now are able to focus on what areas of research need to find sponsors and
support.

We will be compiling shortly the reports from the working
group sessions and preparing a summary report of the pre-conference, as well as
announcing other follow-up activities.

The SSRC was also an active participant at the National Conference on Media Reform from January 12-14 in Memphis. Among our activities:
A new brochure on the Necessary Knowledge program was distributed in all of registration kits received by the 3,000+ participants at the NCMR.
We sponsored a booth in the exhibition area, where we surveyed around 100 media activists on their research needs as well as dispensed information about the Necessary Knowledge program.
We also did a presentation on the Media Research Hub and collaborative grants projects at a session on "Online Activist Tools" which was quite well received.Pictures from the pre-conference and the NCMR are available online .

We look forward to continuing to work with you in the
coming year and beyond.

Regards,

The Necessary Knowledge Team
